On February 4, 1904, over 100 men of the Schutztruppe under the leadership of Victor Franke broke the siege of Omaruru by 3,000 Herero. Previously, Franke had marched there from Gibeon in 19 days. During the battle, in which the German troops also used two cannons, more than 100 Herero and seven Germans died. In April 1906, funds were raised for the construction of the Franke Tower as part of a fundraising campaign.

Zuvor war Franke in einem 19-tägigen Marsch von Gibeon dorthin gezogen. Im Verlauf des Kampfes, bei dem von den deutschen Truppen auch zwei Kanonen eingesetzt wurden, starben mehr als 100 Herero und sieben Deutsche. Im April 1906 wurden im Rahmen einer Spendensammlung Gelder für den Bau des Franketurms gesammelt,

Man brauchte bis zu 20 Zugtiere, um die Fracht von bis zu 30 dz zu transportieren. Am Ausspannplatz durften bzw. mussten die Tiere wieden, die Reise dauerte!

Ich habe viele derartige Bilder und gucke dann zu Hause nach, ob es die Firma noch gibt, was die heute machen usw. Fabile für Geschichte halt. Interessiert das auch andere?

Bremse funktioniert noch, oder?
Bei der Alten Feste stehen noch einige Fahrzeuge aus der Kolonialzeit, mittlerweile meist ungeschützt. Die Frage ist, wie lange sie noch Wind und Wetter trotzen können.

A king widowbird
In its splendid plumage, the male is black on the crown, the rest of the upper body, and the rump. The sides of the head, the nape, and the underside of the body are golden yellow. After the breeding season, the long feathers fall out during molting.

Ein Königswitwer
Im Prachtkleid ist das Männchen am Scheitel und auf der übrigen Körperoberseite und Steiß schwarz gefärbt. Die Kopfseiten, der Nacken und die Körperunterseite ist goldgelb gefärbt. Nach der Brutperiode fallen die langen Federn während der Mauser aus.
Die Königswitwe ist ein Brutparasit.

In 1907, LEMCO (Liebig’s Extract of Meat Company; now Oxo) acquired more than 200,000 hectares of land. In 1911, a house was built and named after Justus von Liebig. In the following years, high-ranking company employees were housed here. Meanwhile, the house has been left to decay.

1907 erwarb LEMCO (Liebig’s Extract of Meat Company; heute Oxo) mehr als 200.000 Hektar Land. 1911 wurde Haus erbaut, benannt nach Justus von Liebig. In den Folgejahren wurden hier hochrangige Mitarbeiter des Unternehmens untergebracht. Mittlerweile ist das haus dem Verfall überlassen.
