Auf den ersten Blick nichts Ungewöhnliches, sollte man denken. Ein großes Denkmal für einen bedeutenden Musiker, der eng mit der Stadt verbunden ist. Ganz normal also. Erst auf den zweiten Blick erschließt sich die wechselvolle Geschichte des Denkmals, das tief hinein führt in düsterste und hellere Geschichten der Leipziger Musik- und Stadtgeschichte.
Eingeweiht wurde das Denkmal 1892 vor dem im zweiten Weltkrieg zerstörten, 1884 errichteten Gewandhaus im Musikviertel. Ziel war es, die zahlreichen Verdienste des bedeutenden Gewandhauskapellmeisters, Gründer der ersten Deutschen Musikhochschule und Bach-Erinnerer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy für die Musikstadt Leipzig zu würdigen.
