The castle Pfalzgrafenstein, also called the Pfalz near Kaub, is a toll castle built on a rock island in the Rhine near Kaub. Its oldest part is the tower, which Ludwig the Bavarian, Count Palatine of the Rhine and later Roman-German king and emperor, had built in 1326. The building had the task of overseeing the collection of the ship toll at the toll station located on the right bank of the Rhine opposite in Kaub. Because of this purpose, the island castle – unlike other castles on the Middle Rhine – did not serve as a residence.
