Hercules is the landmark of the city of Kassel. However, the figure of Hercules on the octagon and the pyramid was not part of the original plan. The decision to have the Greek demigod adorn the building was only made in 1713.
It all began in 1696 with the first work on the "Old Winterkasten" – the water reservoir on the side of the Habichtswald facing away from Kassel. In 1700, Landgrave Karl traveled to Italy to meet the future architect Francesco Gueriero. Just a year later, Gueriero came to Kassel and inspected the site. In 1703, the first contract between Landgrave Karl and Gueriero was concluded.
This contract was the prerequisite for the water features in Wilhelmshöhe Park. A larger Winterkasten had to be built; subsequently, the construction of the cascades was contractually agreed upon in 1704.
