Imperia - Konstanz

The Imperia statue at the harbor entrance in Konstanz on Lake Constance is not only a popular photo subject and landmark of the city of Konstanz but also probably one of the most controversial artworks in public space.
On a pedestal made from the remains of a former pier tower stands a 9-meter-high, 18-ton concrete figure of a scantily clad woman wearing a fool's cap. On her outstretched arms, she carries two naked male figures. On one hand sits a figure with a papal tiara, legs crossed, while on the other hand, with legs spread, is a figure wearing an imperial crown holding a globus cruciger. The female figure stands on a rotating platform that completes one full turn every four minutes.
