Blast furnaces 3 and 4 were demolished relatively early, in 1968 and 1970 respectively. Blast furnaces 1 and 2 were shut down in 1982, leaving only blast furnace 5 – which had been built in 1973 – still in operation. In 1985, after only twelve years of operation, this last blast furnace was also shut down due to overcapacity in the European steel market.
Subsequently, the old industrial site between Hamborn and Meiderich – including all buildings and the three remaining blast furnaces – was declared a project of the International Building Exhibition "Emscher Park." Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord:The former industrial site was founded in 1902 by August Thyssen as the "Aktiengesellschaft für Hüttenbetrieb" to supply his Siemens-Martin steelworks in Bruckhausen and Styrum; on May 16, 1903, it began operation with the blowing in of blast furnace 1. During its 84 years of operation, the site's five blast furnaces produced a total of 37 million tons of special pig iron – typically as an intermediate product for further processing in Thyssen's steelworks.

Die ehemalige Industrieanlage wurde 1902 von August Thyssen als „Aktiengesellschaft für Hüttenbetrieb“ gegründet, um seine Siemens-Martin-Stahlwerke in Bruckhausen und Styrum zu versorgen; am 16. Mai 1903 nahm sie mit dem Anblasen des Hochofens 1 den Betrieb auf. Im Laufe ihrer 84-jährigen Betriebszeit produzierten die fünf Hochöfen des Standorts insgesamt 37 Millionen Tonnen Spezialroheisen – typischerweise als Zwischenprodukt zur Weiterverarbeitung in den Stahlwerken von Thyssen.
Die Hochöfen 3 und 4 wurden verhältnismäßig früh, nämlich 1968 beziehungsweise 1970, abgerissen. Die Hochöfen 1 und 2 wurden 1982 stillgelegt, sodass lediglich der Hochofen 5 – der erst 1973 errichtet worden war – noch in Betrieb blieb. Im Jahr 1985, nach einer Betriebszeit von nur zwölf Jahren, wurde auch dieser letzte Hochofen aufgrund von Überkapazitäten auf dem europäischen Stahlmarkt stillgelegt.
In der Folgezeit wurde das alte Industriegelände zwischen Hamborn und Meiderich – einschließlich aller Gebäude und der drei verbliebenen Hochöfen – zu einem Projekt der Internationalen Bauausstellung „Emscher Park“ erklärt. Von 1990 bis 1999 wurden die Hallen, Gebäude und Außenanlagen nach den Plänen der Architekten umgestaltet und für neue Nutzungen adaptiert.
