The Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) is a monotypic species belonging to the family of ducks (Anatidae). It is the smallest of the diving ducks and is classified among the sea ducks. However, it occupies a special position within this group because it differs morphologically and anatomically from the other species. One of the unusual characteristics of this species, which is widespread in the far north, is that it molts its feathers three times a year.
The Long-tailed Duck is one of the most numerous ducks of the Arctic fauna and was considered not threatened until recently. About five million Long-tailed Ducks lived in western Russia and three times as many in the rest of its range. However, the species has experienced a significant population decline in Europe over the past two decades and was therefore classified as vulnerable by the IUCN for the first time in 2012. Among all Anatinae, it has the northernmost breeding range. In Europe, it is present during the wint...The Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) is a monotypic species belonging to the family of ducks (Anatidae).
