In 1910, the Danish-Irish astronomer John L. E. Dreyer included it in his "Second Index Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars" under the designation IC 5076. The Canadian astronomer Sidney van den Bergh identified this nebula as a reflection nebula on the photographic plates of the Palomar Sky Survey and included it in his 1966 catalog of reflection nebulae under the designation vdB 137. He noted: Type II (star outside the nebula), very bright, very blue, moderate absorption, radius 6.8' (red) to 4.8' (blue).

Der britische Astronom Isaac Roberts entdeckte am 13. September 1895 einen Nebel um den etwa 5 mag hellen Stern V2140 Cygni. Dieser wurde 1910 vom dänisch-irischen Astronomen John L. E. Dreyer in seinem 1910 erschienenen «Second Index Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars» unter der Bezeichnung IC 5076 aufgenommen. Der kanadische Astronom Sidney van den Bergh identifizierte auf den Fotoplatten des «Palomar Sky Survey» diesen Nebel als Reflexionsnebel und nahm ihn unter der Bezeichnung vdB 137 in seinen 1966 erschienenen Katalog von Reflexionsnebeln auf. Er notierte dazu: Typ II (Stern außerhalb des Nebels), sehr hell, sehr blau, moderate Absorption, Radius 6.8' (rot) bis 4.8' (blau).
