Fort Pannerden was built from 1869 to 1872 at the fork of the Pannerden Canal (Dutch: Pannerdensch Kanaal) and the Waal River, as one of the largest forts in the Netherlands. It was intended to serve as a barrier against invading troops advancing via the Rhine and Waal towards Fortress Holland, behind the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.
