Idioms Illustrated

Picture game featuring idioms, proverbs, wisdom sayings, quotes, and popular expressions...
Hello everyone.
Inspired by Pic’s fork photo with shadow titled “Where there’s light, there’s also shadow,” I’d like to suggest a game 🙂 .
Let’s call it: “Idioms in Pictures.”
We’re looking for images that match idioms, proverbs, sayings, quotes, common expressions, etc. — all in German language.
It’s often fascinating to learn about the origins and background 🤔 behind these phrases.
What makes it especially fun is adding 1-2 sentences to the photo title explaining this 😃 .

I’ll start off with a photo of a peacock’s back view:

“A beautiful back can also delight.” Origin: unknown, possibly from the fashion world.
You can find plenty of inspiration for idioms here on “Wiktionary.”
https://de.wiktionary.org/wiki/Verzeichnis:Deutsch/Sprichw%C3%B6rter
Now all you need is the right photo and a short sentence explaining the meaning or origin.
Have fun playing “Idioms in Pictures.”

Great idea. That really sparks a bit of imagination and creativity.
I'm definitely in. Do we need a specific category for this?
Maybe *Experiments* would be a good fit..

I’d like to join in too! Pic Hunter’s idea of “experiments” is a great suggestion. Now Toni definitely needs to step up and set up the new category, right?

@Karl-Heinz Sauer No, that category already exists. But I’m not sure how to get there. I think it’s through Special...

@Pic Hunter   I took a look under SPECIAL.
For me, two different subcategories could fit under this main heading:

1.) ASSOCIATIONS or 2.) PUZZLE IMAGES

PS: I was thinking it might work like the `NeverEnding Story´ or the `Syllable Wordplay´ 🤔 .

Now that I’ve found the category, I’m not so sure if illustrating idioms really fits here. Regardless, how is this supposed to work? I’m imagining that Waldkauz would upload “their idiom” as an image file under “Experiments” or some other category, and then users would add their own images there. Only after a set period could a new idiom be introduced. I’m no expert—just my two cents!

@Karl-Heinz Sauer

My initial, simple idea was this:
Anyone who has a quote with a fitting image uploads it to the designated folder or category as a shared collection.

However, your idea is also a great option that I really like and promises more engagement.

A quote is given, and anyone who wants can upload their matching image for that quote.
That raises the question:
How and when does the next quote get chosen?
Who decides on the next quote challenge?
It would make sense to only move on once at least one image has been submitted for the current quote.

Maybe others have some input as well?

Interesting idea!
For things like this, we’ve set up the category Special/Common Topic.
To keep things simple, all images related to a topic should include the topic in their title.
For example, here it could be "Idioms" or the idiom itself.

By the way:
All images already uploaded there are actually in the wrong category.
Unfortunately, I can’t understand why those images were placed there.

@Wald kauz I'm not at my PC right now, so I can't check. But I'm pretty sure there's a category called Experiment. I’m not sure if or how you can insert images HERE. In theory, that would be great, but I don’t think it’s possible. You could upload the photo to an image hosting site and then post the link here, but that’s a bit of a hassle, and not everyone wants their picture floating around the internet. So, experiments it is. Or puzzle images..

Oops..
I was too late. Toni already mentioned the category.

Maybe it could work to show the image without the title and have people guess the saying?

@Toni Thank you for the quick help.
To make it easier to find, should we spell out "Gem."?
Have a great weekend.

@Wald kauz
Thanks for the heads-up. It's done.
Wishing you all a great weekend as well.

@everyone
If you've uploaded your pictures to the "Shared Theme" category, you can link the thumbnails in a related forum thread. By the way, you can do the same with "Collaborative Editing."

@Pic Hunter The idea definitely has its charm! I just worry that the vast majority of users would prefer to contribute a photo rather than a text. But we should definitely keep the text option in reserve, since none of us can predict how the campaign will develop overall!

@ everyone I suggest we agree on one category called "Collaborative Editing," with Wald Kauz as the idea generator providing the idioms. He should also introduce a new idiom whenever he feels one for "worn out" is needed. Whether the idiom appears as text in the image or as the image title is, in my opinion, secondary. Everyone can do it their own way, like Pastor Nolte! Let’s just get started—with the already mentioned idiom "a nice back..." So, Wald Kauz, please kick things off with a brief note in this forum! Thanks!
Best, Okasa

@Karl-Heinz Sauer

I think you really hit the nail on the head with your assumption "Just upload a pic – that’s it."
It’s a shame, because it could really add value to the whole thing in every way.

Pic’s idea of guessing the idiom from an image is definitely more challenging – but that’s fine too.
Still, even here... what happens after the solution?

Let’s hope for more participants with good ideas 🙂 .

@Karl-Heinz Sauer Looks like I’ll have to sit this one out for now since I’m still a guest and have already completed my daily task of 1 image.
But that shouldn’t stop you from getting started as suggested.

The solution:
Since not everyone has the perfect photo ready, we should set a time frame. Five days?
During this time, everyone can share their photo—whether freshly taken or from their archive. It doesn’t matter.
After that, we could introduce the new word here. Only one question remains: who decides who does this?
The last person to upload a photo?

@Karl-Heinz Sauer The category "Collaborative Editing" is meant for images that are edited together by multiple people and then uploaded online. Since this idea doesn't involve collaboratively editing an image, this wouldn't be the appropriate category.

Just paste the photo ID from the bottom right of the image into a text field.
Give it a try, it’s really simple! No need to worry about any complications.

Hello everyone,

In the photo, we see a mouse holding a spool of thread. It’s not making any move to bite off the hanging thread. Therefore, the phrase “da beißt die Maus keinen Faden ab” (literally: “the mouse won’t bite off a thread there”) is used correctly.

This expression is often used when something is inevitable or unchangeable. For example: “I have to pay my taxes; there’s just no way around it.” The exact origin of this phrase isn’t clearly established, and there are various explanations.

@Toni

Thanks for the tip on how to insert the photo.

Best regards, Harry

Hello everyone,

That was easy. Several answers were correct. The phrase we were looking for was “putting something by”. Nowadays, this expression is commonly used when someone saves a portion of their money.

This saying dates back to a time before banks as we know them existed to securely store money. For example, in the Middle Ages, if someone had a significant amount of cash, they wanted to hide it as safely as possible from potential thieves. One way was to tuck it away on the upper edge of a bed frame or inside other tall pieces of furniture. This kept the money out of sight and safe. That was the “high edge.”

Best regards, Harry
