Erich von Däniken has passed away

Press Release
Swiss author Erich von Däniken has passed away.

He was 90 years old and best known for his theories about UFOs.

I liked him, even though I remained quite skeptical. In the 1970s, he brought a fresh and entertaining perspective, and as a side effect of his work, he helped loosen the old, dusty communication style of conservative scientists. To me, he was a modern blend of Til Eulenspiegel and Baron Münchhausen—in a positive way. The aggressive attitude of today’s conspiracy theorists was completely foreign to him; he was different, more positive!

So, what’s this news doing in a photography forum? Well, didn’t we all want to photograph a UFO back then?

PS: He never denied the moon landing, and he believed the Earth was round!

A fitting comparison might be calling him a modern mix of Til Eulenspiegel and Baron Munchausen.

I never actually bought one of his books myself, but back then, with so few media options available, you really couldn’t avoid him. On one hand, I saw through his act, but on the other, he had this strange magnetic pull that made you stop and keep watching while channel surfing.

@Erich Kremer: I had the opportunity to meet Erich von Däniken in person many years ago in Wels, Upper Austria, where he generously spent several hours with us.
A very fascinating individual and a kind person.
