What are your favorite subjects to photograph?

Hello everyone,
do you also have special "favorite photo subjects"?
My so-called "favorite photo subjects" are actually plants, but of course, there are many other subjects people love to photograph.
Best wishes from Ulrike. 🙂

Favorite subjects are always a bit of a tricky thing. For me, macro photography usually takes the lead, whether it’s flowers or insects. I also enjoy capturing architecture. The challenge for me is finding interesting buildings, but of course, churches are always a must.
My favorite subjects also depend on my mood that day.

Animals, plants, people, architecture — if it’s worth a photo, I’m in.
Ah, those digital tricks and rendering, just a side thing...

For me, it’s definitely animals. I prefer wildlife photography, but since that takes a lot of time—which I don’t always have—I also spend a lot of time shooting at the zoo. I’ve rarely tried photographing small animals because I don’t have a macro lens. But I really like Pic’s approach: “it just has to be worth a photo.” I also enjoy landscapes, interesting cultural sites I visit, and of course, the occasional experiment. Most of those don’t work out, but you always learn something from them.

Hello Ulrike,

For me, it’s definitely mushrooms. Plants and landscapes aren’t far behind, though.

Best regards, Harry

Since I live in the Ruhr area, where much of the old industry has now become part of the industrial heritage, I’m especially drawn to these kinds of scenes. But I also can’t pass by beautiful natural landscapes without noticing them.

Hello Ria W., hello Pic Hunter, hello Korbinian Ring, hello Harry, hello Thorsten, thank you all for your kind words on this topic!
There really is a great variety for everyone, which keeps things interesting and gives each subject its own appeal.
Landscape photography isn’t quite my thing; I’m more drawn to the plant world, especially close-ups. I also enjoy photographing certain objects or capturing details. Somehow, there always seem to be plenty of subjects.
I’m always delighted by the wonderful selection of beautiful photos here!
Warm regards back to you from Ulrike. :-)

I've been thinking for a long time about what my main motivation could be. I've been searching for a personal motto for years but haven't found the right one.
I'm generally open to anything new. One thing that naturally comes up for me is that since I do travel occasionally (mostly long-distance trips), themes tend to emerge on their own.
But as I said, I can't really settle on anything definitive.

My focus is on portraits, stage photography, and documentary work. However, I usually work in series; for example, a portrait series of all the soccer players on a team, all the gardeners in a community garden, documenting a theater production with 100 photos, or capturing a church with 100 images, and so on. I won’t get far here with that approach, so I’m picking out some "older" photos that hopefully stand on their own, or I’m doing some practice exercises at my desk or with Photoshop during the pandemic. What I can meaningfully show here isn’t really representative of my main work.

I’ll chime in with a bit of casual chatting.
Basically, I photograph whatever sparks my curiosity and aligns with my interests.

My main focus areas are...
- Animal, nature, and landscape photography, including macro shots.
- A significant part of my work is city and (industrial) architectural photography.
- I also capture plenty of event and concert photos.
- Of course, my camera always comes along on trips and vacations.
Less represented in my portfolio are...
- Sports and action shots.
- Candid, street, and documentary-style photos.

Portrait and nude photography aren’t really my thing.
I have very few trick or special effects photos.
I’m not into photo experiments at all, even though I can definitely appreciate the results.
Best regards.

First, take your group photo.
Or are you still cleaning up?
You still need to put your idea into action 😉

@Ulrike Roland Hello Ulrike,

To me, these are definitely people. Especially when experimenting and capturing spontaneous facial expressions.
Costumes, outfits, and so on.
Oh my! People are so diverse and unique.
I especially love it when they initially say no because they don’t think they’re photogenic, but then after a short while, they open up and just can’t stop.
Those people keep coming back, and you can see how they start to like themselves.
I think that’s wonderful.

But I also enjoy photographing animals and anything else that, as mentioned before, might be worth capturing in a photo.

Ah yes, we all know how it goes—after a few days, the motivation to tidy up usually fades away again 😉
Still keeping it in mind. Just needs a bit more time...

Favorite photography subjects? Some people tell me that I'm good at wildlife photography (and animals). I haven't settled on just one style, and I don't want to. I enjoy experimenting.
IR, astrophotography, Lensbaby, also black and white, macro, and more.
I do only minimal editing.

I don't really have favorite subjects. But I do know what I don't like to photograph: people. They almost always complain about the result because the photo reveals the truth.

Hello Ulrike!
I’ve already touched on this topic in my profile. I don’t really see myself as a photographer, more like a basic snapshot taker because I feel I lack that “artistic flair.”
I say basic because I focus on just three areas: animals, travel, and sports. Unfortunately, sports photos don’t get much recognition in the community. But that doesn’t stop me from sharing them. It’s understandable that the response is usually pretty low. Travel is another tricky area right now. I’m holding back, which naturally affects how many photos I’m able to share. And old photos—often taken under very different conditions than today—aren’t really my thing either! So that leaves animal photos.
Because of this, I can’t really engage with comments and critiques on topics I don’t know much about, and I hope the community understands that. Of course, I do like photos that aren’t exactly “my thing.” But what can I say? “I like it, well seen and captured,” and so on. For me, a simple compliment (a thumbs up) works just as well!
Sending warm regards for today, Okasa

@Ulrike Roland Most of my subjects come from nature! But I also find other things interesting, like old buildings and technology. I believe you can find inspiration everywhere! Seeing the world with "open" eyes is the most important thing for photographers. Best regards, Detlef Laemmel!

Hello everyone,

I enjoy capturing anything that comes into view around the city or while traveling. What I really struggle with is photographing people. Whether it’s street photography or portraits, it’s just not my thing. But everyone has their own preferences.

Best regards, Ben

Hello everyone,

I definitely have favorite subjects. After a lot of thought, I’ve come up with a ranking:
1. Arachnids 2. Arachnids 3. Arachnids and everything related to them 4. Insects 5. All other nature subjects

Unfortunately, people aren’t my thing—I’ve tried, but I’d rather not. But these five categories more than fill my photography life.
Best, Gerwin
