The Mathildenbrunnen was named after the wife of King Henry I. The widow Queen Mathilde had the founding of a women's convent confirmed by Henry I's son and successor to the throne, Otto I. She was part of the board of this women's convent on Quedlinburg Castle Hill for 30 years, although she was never an abbess.

Mitten in dieser Fußgängerzone befindet sich der gleichnamige Mathildenbrunnen. Dieser Brunnen ist ein Zeugnis der Geschichte der Stadt und gehört zu den vielen sehenswerten Ausflugszielen von Quedlinburg.
Der Mathildenbrunnen erhielt seinen Namen nach der Gattin des Königs Heinrich I. Die Witwe Königen Mathilde ließ vom Sohn Heinrichs I. und somit Thronnachfolger Otto I. die Gründung eines Frauenstifts bestätigen. Sie gehörte 30 Jahre lang zum Vorstand dieses Frauenstifts auf dem Quedlinburger Schlossberg. Dabei war sie nie Äbtissin gewesen.
