The Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) first appeared in Germany around 1877. The beetle originates from central Mexico and spread to Europe via the US state of Colorado around 1870. In a very short time, the beetles and larvae can completely strip entire potato fields. Until after World War II, there was no real remedy against the potato beetle. Entire school classes collected the little beetle in the fields under the slogan "Be a fighter, not a sleeper, watch out for the potato beetle!"

Der Kartoffelkäfer (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) tauchte in Deutschland zum ersten Mal um 1877 auf. Der Käfer stammt aus Zentralmexiko und breitete sich über den US-Bundesstaat Colorado um 1870 nach Europa aus. In kürzester Zeit können die Käfer und Larven ganze Kartoffelfelder kahl fressen. Bis nach dem 2. Weltkrieg gab es kein wirkliches Mittel gegen den Kartoffelkäfer. So haben ganze Schulklassen unter dem Slogan „Sei ein Kämpfer, sei kein Schläfer, acht’ auf den Kartoffelkäfer!“ auf den Feldern den kleinen Käfer gesammelt.
Ich kann mich noch gut daran erinnern, dass ich in den 70er Jahren den Kartoffelkäfer eingesammelt habe. Vom Bauer gab es eine Belohnung, hin und wieder ein paar Mark oder Kartoffeln für die Mutter.
