The Mende Fountain is located on the southern half of Augustusplatz in front of the (third) Gewandhaus. Around a central granite obelisk about 18 meters high, several bronze figures, some of which spout water, are arranged in a water basin.
In her will dated April 9, 1867, Mrs. Marianne Pauline Mende (1807–1881) donated a fountain to the city of Leipzig to beautify the city. On January 4, 1882, 150,000 gold marks were paid out from her estate for this purpose. The neo-baroque design for the Mende Fountain was created by the Nuremberg senior building officer Adolf Gnauth (1840–1884), and the bronze figures were made by the Munich sculptor Jakob Ungerer. Since the construction costs of 188,726.03 gold marks were not fully covered by the foundation capital, which had meanwhile grown to 181,562.87 gold marks, the missing amount (7,163.16 gold marks) was supplemented from the estate of the Leipzig donor Franz Dominic Grassi (1801–1880).
In ihrem Testament vom 9.
