The hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum), also called hummingbird moth or carp tail, is a butterfly (moth) from the family of hawk moths (Sphingidae). Its German name derives from the two-part tuft of hair at the end of its abdomen, which somewhat resembles the tail feathers of pigeons. As a migratory moth, the hummingbird hawk-moth is known throughout almost all of Europe. Due to its distinctive flight behavior, called hovering flight, which resembles that of a hummingbird, it is also called hummingbird hawk-moth or hummingbird butterfly. Many supposed hummingbird sightings in Europe are actually observations of this butterfly species. The hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum), also called hummingbird moth or carp tail, is a butterfly (moth) from the family of hawk moths (Sphingidae).
