Cold wind swept through the canyons of houses and carried the echo of a distant, restless world with it. On the deserted bridge, high above the sluggish river, the air suddenly shimmered. A deep, rhythmic beating cut through the silence, followed by a soft, metallic clinking. From the swirling dust she rose. Her massive wings of pitch-black feathers caught the last, dying light of the evening sun. Each individual feather seemed not to reflect the light but to greedily devour it. She wore a skin-tight suit that shimmered like liquid onyx, interwoven with fine, silver lines that pulsed faintly in time with her heartbeat. Her gaze was fixed behind a dark mask – sharp, relentless, and ancient. She was no creature of the sky, yet she did not belong to the earth. She was the balance. With a smooth movement, she bent her knees, pressed her fingertips to the cold concrete, and felt the vibrations of the city. The city wept. She felt the pain of the lost, the greed of the powerful, and the trembling of the innocent. For the people, she was a myth, a terrifying figure of the night, the "Black Angel." But she had not come to judge. She had come to preserve. A deep rumble went through her wings as she tightened the feathers. The silver lines on her suit glowed dazzlingly, charged with an energy older than the bridge on which she stood. A single, powerful thrust of her wings was enough. The ground trembled, and in the next fraction of a second, she shot up like a black lightning bolt into the cloud-covered sky, ready to confront the darkness.more Less
