Die Vögel reiben ihren Schnabel in eisenhaltigem Moorwasser oder schlammiger Erde und streichen sich das Gemisch anschließend über das ansonsten hellgraue Rückengefieder. Dadurch färben sie sich selbst dunkelbraun und verschmelzen optisch ideal mit dem Hintergrund ihres Nistplatzes.
