Klaus der Geiger, known as Klaus Christian von Wrochem, is a politically engaged musician and songwriter within the left-alternative spectrum of the New Social Movements. He is considered one of the most well-known street musicians in Germany.
Von Wrochem, who comes from an upper-class family, began studying violin in 1960 with Max Rostal at the Cologne University of Music. At that time, he earned money as a substitute violinist in various symphony orchestras and as an employee of the WDR. He also tried his hand as a modern composer. Eight years later, he was expelled from the university but received a composer scholarship for studies in Buffalo and San Diego in the USA. There, he studied, among others, with Pauline Oliveros in "Avant-garde Composition."
During his two-year stay abroad, von Wrochem also came into contact with the hippie movement. He married in 1965, returned to Germany in 1970, and moved into a commune. Der aus großbürgerlichem Haus stammende von Wrochem begann 1960 ein Violinstudium bei Max Rostal an der Musikhochschule in Köln. Zu dieser Zeit verdiente er sich sein Geld als Aushilfsgeiger in verschiedenen Sinfonieorchestern und als Mitarbeiter des WDR. Zudem versuchte er sich als moderner Komponist. Acht Jahre später wurde er von der Universität ausgeschlossen, erhielt aber ein Komponisten-Stipendium für ein Studium in Buffalo und San Diego in den USA. Dort studierte er unter anderem bei Pauline Oliveros „Komposition der Avantgarde“.
