Pastel Colors

Looking for Tips and Tricks to Keep Pastel Colors Cheerful and Vibrant?

Pastel Colors

Pastel colors are colors with a high white content. In other words, they are light and delicate shades. In photography, bold colors are toned down and transformed into cheerful pastel colors. Here, we want to gather tips and tricks for creating vibrant pastel colors and possibly explore this topic further. Feel free to add examples here as a PhotoID. You can always find the PhotoID on the right side below the photo in the enlarged view.

Analog:

  • Be sure to use a negative film. It will also work digitally, of course.
  • Overexpose slightly—avoid harsh contrast—shadows should still retain detail.
  • Use diffused light—days without direct shadows or strongly diffuse continuous light.
  • Inform the lab not to apply any corrections—preferably include a reference shot with normal contrast at the beginning.

Last week, there were some shots that showed pastel colors. You can adjust the settings digitally to compensate, though I’m not an expert on that—maybe someone else can chime in. If the lighting and exposure are too contrasty, as with analog, it might also be challenging to fix digitally.

Best regards, Andreas
