Photo tent, hunting stand, camouflage
Since I just got a bit envious of Günter Häusler’s wild rabbit photo... Do you use camouflage tents, blankets, or something similar when you're out in nature? Or do you rely on patience and staying perfectly still?
I’m not always up for lugging around a huge piece of gear and would love to get a bit closer to wildlife. I’m always grateful for any tips!

Well, for telephoto shots, I already have a big telephoto lens. I was really more concerned about hiding spots. There's nothing I can do about the weather anyway.

From my experience, you get better photos using compact, high-performance gear than by lugging around heavy equipment.

I think "hauling" is a bit of an exaggeration. The gear is definitely bulky and not light, so you’re right about that—but that only applies to getting there. Once you’re on site, that’s a whole different story. I’m really glad to have a big telephoto lens, even if sometimes my camera backpack isn’t quite big enough.

I actually don’t own a camouflage tent. There are other reasons for that, but so far it hasn’t been worth it for me. I’ve often had good results with patience and staying still (though that obviously depends on the animal). Otherwise, I use a camo wrap for the lens and a 2x2m camo net for myself. But it really depends a lot on the species and the location.
